Authority and Power | by Kevin Meyer

Never confuse authority and power.

Watch a basketball game and you will know what I mean. The players tower over the referees. The players are bigger, stronger and far more powerful than the often older, smaller and slower referees. The players, with a quick powerful move. Yet the referees, with a tweet of their whistle, can stop a game and send a player to the showers, because they have the authority to do that. There is a difference between authority and power.

Satan is far more powerful than us earth-bound people. When it comes to strength, there is no contest. Like a basketball referee we are plainly outsized. You may not realize it, but when it comes to authority there is no contest. In Christ you have the authority to send Satan to the proverbial showers. Did you know that with a single word, every demonic spirit trembles?

Many demons filled a man. The chief demonic spirit named Legion begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. - Mark 5:10 He quaked with fear at the very name of Jesus. He knew Jesus had the authority to eject him out of the game.

Jesus has authority. Jesus disarmed and dismantled the powers and authorities, making a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross (Colossians 2:15). God gave the ultimate authority to His Son. All things are subject to Jesus. At the name of Jesus every knee must bow. In that single name, Jesus, rests absolute authority.

Satan may seek to intimidate you with his power, but he has absolutely no authority over you if you are a follower of Jesus. Satan knows it; he doesn't want you to know it!

Don't live ignorant of all you have in Christ. Jesus is exalted far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and God raised us up with Christ and seated us in the heavenly realms in Christ (Ephesians 1:21; 2:6). In Christ you have gained access to the authority of Christ and this is a crucial part of your identity in Christ. Satan loves to steal your identity through lies and fear. Learn how to walk victoriously in the authority of Jesus.

Never confuse authority and power.
